Defining Museo de las Americas

Mission
The Museo de las Americas educates and inspires all audiences to the art and culture of the people of Latin America, from ancient times to the present.

Background
Located in the heart of Denver’s Santa Fe Art District, the Museo de las Américas was founded in 1991 as a nonprofit museum that is committed to preserving, presenting, and promoting the art and culture of the Latino people. Through innovative exhibitions and collections, bilingual programs, educational activities and special events, the Museo educates its public in the richness of Latin American arts.

Exhibitions/Collections
In Exhibitions, The Museo ’s curatorial premise is the principle of then and now.
To appreciate now we have to have an understanding of then... to value then, we have to be aware of where we are now. The Museo approaches all of its exhibitions in this way - with historical and contemporary viewpoints hand-in- hand. In Collections, t he Museo has over 4,000 objects. Through the kind donations of collectors such as the Eleanor & Irving Tragen and Bill & Retha Bloodworth families, the Museo has developed two main focuses: The Ancient Art of the Americas and Art of the People. Both collections provide a distinct look into two fascinating worlds of Latin America.

Programs
The Museo de las Américas offers symposiums, lectures, panels, and artists talks to broaden the depth of knowledge about the topic presented in the exhibitions. It also offers special cross-disciplinary programs with each exhibition such as Film Night and Spanish Happy Hour. In schools, the Museo has established itself as an integral resource for teachers and students. Through interactive tours and outreach workshops of its collections and temporary exhibitions, the Museo has provided valuable learning tools to the school curriculum.

Community Need
With the Latino population growing exponentially in the Denver and wider communities, the Museo plays an important role in building pride in the Latino community’s heritage and promoting understanding among cultures. Other history and art museums in Denver cannot focus on one segment of the community in a sustained or comprehensive manner. The Museo was organized to fill this important niche in the cultural milieu.
